As the holiday season approaches, I find myself reflecting on what the right ingredients for a good Christmas truly are - love, joy, and the warmth of whānau.
I imagine the festive season filled with laughter, where children eagerly await the magic of Christmas morning. Yet I am also aware of the same scene clouded by fear and uncertainty, where the sound of wrapping paper is drowned out by the echoes of conflict. For children affected by family violence the holiday spirit is often overshadowed by the harsh reality of their home lives.
I know you will agree that every child deserves to live violence-free. That’s why, I’m inviting you to join Aviva in creating a recipe for change. Like a Christmas meal - crafted with care and intention, our approach to supporting families takes dedication and hard work. And it’s ongoing – all year around.
We see first-hand how our support workers make a difference in the lives of parents and tamariki in our community, whānau like Cristina and her 9-year-old son Lucas* who are featured in the accompanying newsletter. Cristina’s words explain:
“For the first time in my life, I felt I could be open about my feelings in a safe space. I talked through my disappointment, shame, and fear and I was not judged for any of it.”
Our programmes help parents reconnect with their inner strength, and tamariki to find stability and safety. Cristina continues:
“As I became more comfortable with my feelings, I was able to help Lucas recognise and express his feelings too. I couldn’t have done that without Aviva. They’ve helped me feel more confident in myself and about being a parent.”
Your generous donation this Christmas will provide support services to families throughout the year. It will allow us to expand our reach, offering resources to those seeking support to break free from the cycle of violence. Together, we can build a community where families are empowered to begin this journey of change, not just as a Christmas wish, but as the reality they truly deserve.
Let’s share this recipe for hope and healing. This Christmas, your support is an ingredient that can change lives. Every act of kindness creates a safe, supportive environment when it’s needed most.
Please join us in being the change your community so needs and help us create a better future for Canterbury families. Donate to Aviva at www.aviva.org.nz/donate.
Thank you so much for all you do to support. Meri Kirihimete and a safe and happy new year!
